5 Secrets of Being Happy

Updated: Mar 2, 2023

Not really secrets, but we often need a gentle reminder to find our happy. So, lets discuss how to do just that...UNAPOLOGETICALLY!

I have never heard anyone walk around saying "I want to be unhappy." Not saying it does not happen, but... I've NEVER heard it! As a general rule, we want to be happy. We desire to be fulfilled and satisfied with life. But wanting something and actually obtaining it are two horses of a very different color. In order to reach our happy place, we have to take the journey! Easier said than done, but doable none the less. Here are the #secrets:

1. Be your(true, authentic)self!

Accept you for who you are and live in it. Now, this does not mean stop working on bettering yourself, but it does mean living at whatever standard you find acceptable for YOU. Often times, we find ourselves making failed attempts to live up to the standards of our parents, the church, society, etc. And, we don't even bother to consider the desires of SELF.

2. Self Care

The term "self care" has become synonymous with things like pampering, spa days or a glass of wine and a good book. But, caring for one's self is so much more than a little R&R. You have to understand the connection between your mental, physical, and spiritual (not talking about religion); and put forth efforts to care for each aspect of yourself. Sure, do activities that you enjoy, simply because you enjoy them. But, also make sure you care for your physical needs (proper diet, exercise, spiritual wellness, medical needs, etc.)

3. Speaking of Connectedness...

Humans are relational. We are designed to be connected to other people, places, and things. One way to foster happiness is to surround yourself with the people, places, and things that make you happy. Simple, right? Spend time with talking to people who make you laugh. Go places that don't require added stress (extensive planning, large financial contributions, or potentially triggering). And, find that non-tangible thing: religious beliefs, meditation, yoga, nature, whatever it is that makes you spiritually happy.

4. Be a Good Samaritan

Doing something good for someone else has residual benefits to our personal happiness. Allowing ourselves to be of service (volunteering, community activism, donating time/energy) gives a sense of purpose. It helps us shift focus from self to something bigger.

5. Change

Wait! Didn't I just say be true to self? Yes! And, now I'm saying you have to change? Right, again! Or, at be open to change. It is inevitable...and it can be uncomfortable...but it is sometimes necessary. If you want something different, you often have to do something different to obtain it. Meaning, if you are struggling to find your happy by doing what you are currently doing, switch it up. Move from your comfort zone to your happy place!

Now that you have the secrets, go be happy...UNAPOLOGETICALLY!
